Hyderabad is well known for its heritage, hospitality and different delicacies, and in the month of Ramadan during iftar, every day these delicacies can be bought from different outlets in the twin city or if you become the part of any iftar in the city, you get to taste different dishes free of cost.

Being in Hyderabad for last 3 years I get to taste these dishes quite often, but these delicacies taste much better during Ramadan. The reason behind this I too don’t know.  So the best time to visit Hyderabad is in the month of Ramadan, when you will get the real flavor of Hyderabad.

Hyderabad is a place of non-vegetarians delight, where you can try different dishes which must not be missed by anyone who visits the city. They are:
1.      Hyderabadi Biryani
2.      Nahari
3.      Haleem
4.      Pathar – Ka – Gosht
5.      Double -  Ka - Meetha
6.      Khubani – Ka – Meetha
7.      Seviyon – Ka – Meetha
8.      Kheer

Hyderabadi Biryani
The most popular and awesome dish of Hyderabad is Hyderabadi Biryani, which is eaten and even taken as a parcel for their dear ones in different parts of India. Cooked in a unique manner, this biryani is a blend of Mughals with a special cooking style of Nizams, which has a very different aroma.

There are many variants of biryani such as Mutton Biryani, Chicken Biryani, Biryani Kham, Biryani Zard and the most exotic one is Joban Malti Biryani, which is made of mutton, partridges and quails with rice.

These biryanis are decoratively garnished with mint leaves, fried onions and boiled eggs. The aroma and appearance of these biryanis will certainly make your mouth water. These are served hot with kuchambar or onion raita( made of curd and onion) and mirchi – ka – salan.

Ghost Towns of India

Ghosts do not exist. Their existence is in the mind of humans. At least that is what we believed till now. But some of the leading towns in India will surely change your view on apparitions. These towns are better known as ghost towns for a series of supernatural activities that the locals as well as the tourists experienced, as soon as they stepped into these haunted towns of India. Let us dig into further details and find out some of the ghost towns of India and what is so strange about them.

Ramoji film city,Hyderabad

The Ramoji film city in Hyderabad is as famous in the movie circle as in case of haunting. Believe it or not, the crane lights suddenly roll down and break, toilet doors are banged, creepy things are felt around and women's dresses get torn all of a sudden. Many cameramen have reported that they have often been pushed while at work. But who does it could not be figured out at all. The most eerie thing of all is perhaps the appearance of Urdu letters on the mirrors of the green room without anyone's presence around. Sources say that the film city has been built upon the war ground of the Nizam. Bloodshed and assassination of the war victims has made the ground so cursed that no measures proved full proof in arresting these supernatural incidents.

The National Library, Belvedere Road.

The culture capital of India, Kolkata is known for its rich heritage. But ghost stories also run parallel with the culture and tradition of the place. Among the many haunted places of Kolkata, The National Library located at the Belvedere Road, is one of the prime ones. The students who visit the place regularly, report that they have felt "something" around them but could not see anything substantial. Footsteps tapping up and down the wooden staircases of this ancient British building are commonly heard incidents. People believe that the wife of the then British governor general haunts the place. Staffs and night guards report that they have seen two black colored shadowy figures roaming in the backyard of National Library during the night time.

Delhi Cantonment

The capital of India is also not exempted from paranormal activities. It is in the Delhi Cantonment where a shadowy figure of a lady clad in white is seen regularly after the sunset. She would stand in front of the passing by vehicles and signal for a lift. Those who are aware of this supernatural incident never dare to stop and run through the shadowy figure. But to their utter surprise the figure chases the vehicles with equal speed and seems to melt in the air after sometime. This explains what might happen to a vehicle which stops to give her a lift.

Crematorium area, Dumas.

Located in Gujarat, Dumas is a Hindu cremation area that is haunted. The natives or those who have been to that area, remark that the Dumas beach is highly unsafe for taking a night stroll. It is not because of the antisocial elements but the paranormal activities that are in rage, post sunset. It is said that if you dare to walk in the Dumas beach past sunset, you will hear strange noises that will warn you to go back and not to proceed any further. Even the dogs will start chasing you out of the beach. All these warn against the danger which is beyond control.

Bhangarh

Bhangarh is one of the most prominent places in India which is famous, rather infamous for its paranormal activities. This historical town is located somewhere between Alwar and Jaipur in Rajasthan. As per the history of the place goes, it was established by Madho Singh, the younger sibling of Akbar's general Man Singh. The haunted town gives an impression that it was deserted overnight in a hurry. Not a single form of life is found in this deserted town now except for the wild vegetation. People believe that it is cursed and nobody has the guts to stay there after sunset. One who dares to stay overnight is found dead, the following morning. Even the archaeological department of India did not dare to open an office in this historical town. So, the question remains a mystery as to what happens there during the wee hours of night.

Vrindavan Society,Thane

The frequently recorded incident of haunting in this busy town of India, is in the Vrindavan Society. It is located in West Thane. The residents report that it all started after the suicide of a middle aged man. He jumped down from his apartment, building number 66B and killed himself. The guards patrolling at night there, have reported that they have come across supernatural occurrences since then. One guard also reported that he was slapped hard by somebody invisible. So, if you plan to buy a flat in Vrindavan Society, we will only ask you to have enough of courage to withstand all these eerie incidents.

Bombay High Court

This tinsel town, which is the glamour capital of India, has a place that is haunted as well. It is the Bombay High Court. You might not believe but the locals say with conviction that every time a murder trial is conducted, the presence of a vindictive bilingual apparition is witnessed by those present inside the court room. It curses and frightens the people around. So, either the very brave or the too foolish step inside this haunted court.

Hotel Savoy

Mussoorie is one of the most frequently visit tourist spots. But the Hotel Savoy is perhaps the eternal favorite of Lady Garnet Orme. She was poisoned to death during the British period. The locals report that her restless soul still exists in that luxurious historic hotel and roams all around aimlessly in the darkest of the nights

Shaniwarwada Fort, Pune

The locals in the area of Shaniwarwada Ford get terrified by the words "Uncle save me !". This is exactly what the ghoul of the murdered heir of the kingdom utter and run about all through the fort. Narayanan, the brother-in-law of the Peshwa king Madhavrao was the legal heir of the then province. But in the temporary absence of the Peshwa, he was deceived and brutally killed at the age of thirteen under the order of the wife of Madhavrao. Thus, his restless soul haunts the fort even today and cries aloud for help, especially during the full moon nights. You should dare not visit the fort on such nights.

                                    Shaniwarwada Fort

Dow Hill forest

The serene and dense Dow Hill forest at Kurseong in West Bengal is equally infamous for its uncanny atmosphere. The damp and chilly weather of the forest is itself sufficient in arousing goose bumps even during the day. Added to it is the regular incident of a headless youth walking down the adjacent road and entering the forest to vanish in the air, is most terrifying. So, enter the forest at your own risk.

WORLD MEET IN HYDERABAD, FOR BIODIVERSITY

What is biodiversity...?

Biological diversity (biodiversity)- is a term we use to describe the variety of life on Earth. It refers to the wide variety of ecosystems and living organisms: animals, plants, their habitats and their genes.

Biodiversity is the foundation of life on Earth. It is crucial for the functioning of ecosystems which provide us with products and services without which we couldn’t live. Oxygen, food, fresh water, fertile soil, medicines, shelter, protection from storms and floods, stable climate and recreation - all have their source in nature and healthy ecosystems. But biodiversity gives us much more than this. We depend on it for our security and health. It strongly affects our social relations and gives us freedom and choice

What they discuss...?

The Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) - Opened for signature at the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro in 1992, and entering into force in December 1993, the Convention on Biological Diversity is an international treaty for the conservation of biodiversity, the sustainable use of the components of biodiversity and the equitable sharing of the benefits derived from the use of genetic resources. With 194 Parties, the Convention has near universal participation among countries. The Convention seeks to address all threats to biodiversity and ecosystem services, including threats from climate change, through scientific assessments, the development of tools, incentives and processes, the transfer of technologies and good practices and the full and active involvement of relevant stakeholders including indigenous and local communities, youth, NGOs, women and the business community. The Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety is a subsidiary agreement to the Convention. It seeks to protect biological diversity from the potential risks posed by living modified organisms resulting from modern biotechnology. To date, 159 countries plus the European Union have ratified the Cartagena Protocol.

Hyderabad Modifications During Biodiversity

Hyderabad was chosen over Delhi due to the better conferencing facilities and Hyderabad International Convention Centre, HICC was chosen as the venue for the Conference. Being organised at the cost of about Rs.87 crores, It was a matter of great pride that India will be hosting such an international event for the first ever in the last 60 years. It will put Hyderabad on international map as the declarations would be known after the city.

In this meet  10,000 delegates from 193 countries, including heads of states and governments are participating.Andhra pradesh Chief Minister N Kiran Kumar Reddy,Greater Hyderabad mayor Majid Hussain, Greater Hyderabad Municipal Corporation (GHMC) commissioner Krishna Babu and other senior officials are personally reviewed the arrangements for the mega event. Hyderabad-Bonalu

History of Hyderabad Bonalu
The festival’s history can be traced to as recent as the 18th century, unlike most other festivals whose ancestry can be traced back to the hoary past. The story has it that in 1813, Suriti Appaiah, a ‘doli’ bearer in a military battalion, was transferred to Ujjain. Cholera broke out in Hyderabad around that time claiming thousands of lives.

Appaiah and his associates went to the Mahankaal temple in Ujjain and prayed that if people were saved from the epidemic, they would install the idol of Mahankali in Secunderabad. On their return, they installed a wooden idol of the goddess in Secunderabad in July 1815. This was replaced with a stone statue in 1964.

Following brahminical traditions, all hoary Hindu festivals are marked by astrological precision: their timings marked in terms of the sun/moon entering certain constellations in certain months. But Bonalu is a festival of the farming and lower classes and is certainly not brahminical. So the timing of the celebrations is not so rigorous

Where and When in Hyderabad

Bonalu is celebrated in various parts of the city on different days, all Sundays. On the 1st Sunday of “Ashaada”, celebrations are held at the temple at Golconda fort. On the 2nd Sunday, at Ujjain Mahankali in Secunderabad, and the 3rd Sunday, at the Matheswari temple of Lal Darwaza in Old City.

About Bonalu

Bonalu involves the worship of Kali and her various forms. She destroys disease and keeps pestilence at arms length. Three deities Maisamma, Pochamma and Elamma, are worshipped. The performances are marked by an element of aggression. Potharaju, a masculine power, is believed to weed out all evils. During Bonalu, colourful brass pots, smeared with haldi and kumkum, and decorated with neem leaves are offered to the goddess. The pots usually contain a mixture of raw rice, jiggery, and milk. Sometimes, curd is also used.

The Ritual of Hyderabad Bonalu

Earlier they used to sacrifice a male-buffalo. Now goats and chickens are sacrificed to ward off the ‘evil spirit’ Women carrying Bonalu are believed to possess the spirit of Mother Goddess, and when they go towards the temple, people pour water on their feet to pacify the spirit. On the first day of Bonalu, phalaram bandlu, a buffalo cart, laden with fruits is taken around (phalaru means fruits and bandlu, carts)

Rangam in Hydearabad Bonalu

Rangam, or Forecasting of the Future, Women under spell foretell the year ahead when devotees ask about the future. On the second day of the festival, a ritual known as ‘rangam’ is held. Here, a woman stands on a wet clay pot and makes predictions. This is held mostly between8.30 am and 9.30. An hour later, a procession is taken out on an elephant up to Mettuguda. Earlier, Mettuguda was the border of the city. To this day, the tradition continues.

Ghatam

Ghatam is a copper pot, decorated in the form of mother goddess. The Ghatam is carried by a priest , who wears a traditional dhoti and body with smeared in turmeric . The Ghatam is taken into procession from first day of the festival till last day, when it is immersed in water . The Ghatam in usually accompanied by drums.

Ghatam is followed after Rangam. The festival concludes with immersion of Ghatam. The ghatam of Haribowli's Akkanna Madanna Temple leads the procession, placed atop an elephant and accompanied by mounted horses and models depicting Akkanna and Madanna. It ends in the evening with a glittering procession and display followed by immersion of ghatams at Nayapul

A carnival like atmosphere, where thousands of people wait along the main streets of Laldarwaza to Nayapul and watch the exquisitely and elaborately decorated Ghatams. Young men dance in a unique style to the drum beats and folk songs alongside Pothraju, dress-up in various mythological roles.

The Ghatams of the Old city procession include the Mahankali temples in Haribowli Akkanna-Madanna, Laldarwaza, Uppuguda, Miralam Mandi and Kasaratta, the Jagadamba temple of Sultanshahi, Bangaru Mysamma temple of Shalibanda, Alijah Kotla and Gowlipura, and Sultanshahi, Darbar Mysamma of Aliabad and Mutyalamma temple of Chandulal Bela.

Birla Mandir-Hyderabad

Almost all the temples in South India have an ancient history behind it. Unlike such temples, there adorns a Hindu temple of Lord Venkateshwara in Hyderabad. A quarter century old, this temple was built by Birlas, the well-known Industrialists. Yes, we are talking about the familiar and favourite attraction for all the Hyderabadis, the Birla Temple. Though the temple is dedicated to Lord Venkateshwara with His two wives Goddesses Padmavathi and Goddesses Andal, it is named after Birlas as Birla Mandir or Birla temple. The temple resides on a hillock, called as Kala Pahad, one of the twins of Naubat Pahad.
The temple is built entirely with white marbles (about 70 tons) brought from Rajasthan. It took about ten years to build this temple. The temple brings together the architectural style of Rajasthani, Utkal and other South Indian temples. The main temple is built in Utkal temple style while the temple of the Lord s two consorts is built as per the South Indian architectural style. Before you enter the main sanctum sanctorum, there is a four-storied rajagopuram (the main tower) built in garudalaya style of South Indian temples. The intricately carved structure beyond the Gopuram depicts the Dilwara temple style while the Jagadananda Vimanam or the main tower resembles the architecture of the Lingaraj Temple at Bhubaneswar. A 42 feet lofty dhwaja stambham made of brass, stands before the presiding deity, just outside the main temple.

Unlike the idols seen in the temples built by the Birlas, which are made of white marble, this temple has an idol that is carved out of black granite brought from Phirangipuram in Guntur District. The granite used was specially mined and transported to Hyderabad for this purpose. The eleven feet tall idol of Lord Venkateshwara stands graciously in the main sanctum sanctorum.

When you enter this main sanctum sanctorum, just above the main statue of the Lord, you can see a lotus-shaped covering made of marble. This is superbly carved and illuminated during night times. There is a mukha mandapam that is lined with sculptures and scenes showing some of the episodes from the Ramayana and Mahabharata.
The temple opens at the rise of the dawn, as early as 5:30 AM. This is the time when the melodies of Venkateshwara Suprabhatam and other devotional songs from the verses of Annamacharya, Bhakta Ramadas and Tyagaraja, played, spreads with the rising rays and chirping of the birds in the nearby trees, giving you sense of spirituality. This morning raga rejuvenates one s spirit and makes you feel as if you are in the temple that has been standing since ages.
Evenings in this temple are even more wonderful and give you an out-of-the-world experience. Generally, most of the tourists prefer to visit the temple during evening hours as the whole temple appears soaked in the ocean of illumination. Thousands of tourists and the local visitors throng in here after 5:00 PM. The pleasant atmosphere, the fresh breeze and the touch of your feet to the cold marble flooring makes you feel relaxed and lost in the crowd.
